It's a great time to be a Chicago Bulls fan. Before I break down why, here's a look at today's trade deals:
As the trade deadline finally hit, the Bulls acquired two-time All-Star center Nikola Vucevic and Al-Farouq Aminu from the Orlando Magic. In exchange, the Magic acquired Wendell Carter Jr., Otto Porter Jr. and two first-round draft picks for 2021 and 2023.
The Bulls also acquired Daniel Theis and Javonte Green from the Boston Celtics and Troy Brown from the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal, which involved sending Mo Wagner, who they acquired earlier on Thursday, to the Celtics.
Vooch and Theis now erase a huge weakness the Bulls had all season in the frontcourt. Not only is the issue of not having an aggressive center addressed, but there is a backup center that adds to the depth chart.
These deals not only make the Bulls stronger going forward, but show that the Bulls want Zach LaVine long-term. Bringing in Vooch gives LaVine a helping hand offensively, instead of relying on inconsistent Coby White.
This brings me to the only unaddressed issue this trade deadline: finding a more defensive point guard. Lonzo Ball should have become a Bull today, but maybe they'll pursue him when he becomes a free agent.
Before I go off on my usual Zo-to-the-Bulls tangent, I'm going to wind it back to why Vooch is going to be an impactful front-court player that the Bulls have been needing.
Vooch is averaging a career-high 24.5 points per game, 11.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists this season. He is an offensive threat. He is a good shooter from pretty much any level of the court. And expect to see much more post ups per game compared to what Lauri Markkanen has shown, since he is one of the top post-up players in the league.
Brown is another player that is going to be beneficial to the Bulls going forward. He is a versatile guard/forward that will come in and bring fresh energy and consistency to the wing. This is important since the Bulls have lacked that wing depth, heavily relying on veteran Garett Temple and the inconsistent Denzel Valentine. Brown will provide good perimeter defense.
In exchange for another German center (Wagner), Theis will bring a good level of interior defense to the Bulls. Something fans haven't seen since the days of Joakim Noah. I'm not saying he's at Noah's level, but Theis is a rim protector. If the perimeter defense is lacking, he can make up for it on the interior.
Theis has also improved his shot. He is shooting 34.5% from 3, which is really decent for a big. He's capable of playing defense and stretching the floor, which isn't easy to find when it comes to bigs.
While he's not the most popular person in the market, he will be beneficial for the Bulls, adding depth as a backup center who can also play the 4, if needed.
These new moves can finally take some weight off of LaVine going forward, and the plan for the Bulls is clearly to push for the playoffs and build from this solid foundation.
